Did you know that Carbon Dioxide is essential to life?

Personally, I thought it was oxygen myself. But, that’s one of the reasons Harper used in 2002 to criticize Kyoto about, for its targeting of Co2.. which according to him was “essential to life”. Now, its true that plants and trees need Co2, but they certainly cant handle accelerating rates of Co2 that industries are polluting the atmosphere with; those are NOT essential to life, and for Harper to try and use this as a justification astounds me.

I wonder how long the Liberals had this letter waiting to counterattack with. Perhaps they were anticipating something like the attack ads and were keeping this in their back pocket. Its a brilliant manoeuvrer whatever the case, using Harper’s own words against him to show he really is a climate change skeptic.

  • That’s what gets me about people worried about nuclear weapons. Don’t these people know that Neutrons are an essential building block of all lifeforms on earth?

Jay, you’re so much smarter than me and, in fact, most other people. Now that I’ve said it, don’t feel as though you once again have to do so yourself.[/quote]

    Zing!!

  • “The Tories decision to make these in the first place…”

I like the ads. I think they communicate certain messages effectively.

“the ads being found to probably have copyrighted material”

Yes, this is an issue that will entrance everyday Canadians.

“now this letter that shows Harper for what he is when he’s in the middle of trying to convince everyone of this makeover”

Like I asked, Scott. Why would these quotes make any more difference than the quotes used against Harper in the last election campaign?

“Question Period should be a barrel of laughs for the rest of the week.”

Yes, like today. The trouble is that at the end of QP today, Harper was smiling and Dion was long gone.

IMO the Libs have done a good job of convincing Canadians that PMSH/Conservatives are not Kyoto fans, never have been. So it’s really not a shocker that PMSH said so 5 years ago.

In fact, it’s reflected in this poll done 2 weeks ago.

Voters will forgive PM for ignoring Kyoto
poll: Climate accord only one way to go, 59 per cent say

  • Oh come on Aaron… I know you’re a Tory supporter… but you’re telling me you think no one is paying attention to a) The Tories decision to make these in the first place (your own Blogging Tory people were wondering aloud about the wisdom of this decision), b) the ads being found to probably have copyrighted material in them that they used without permission, and c) now this letter that shows Harper for what he is when he’s in the middle of trying to convince everyone of this makeover – this after he’s belatedly had to bring back cancelled Liberal programs on the environment? The Prime Minister who was recently quoted as saying “so-called” Greenhouse Gases in his interviews a month ago? It shows he’s changed his views on nothing.

Question Period should be a barrel of laughs for the rest of the week.

  • Sorry, that sentence should have read, “Why would these new quotes work now?”

  • The quotes in the Liberals ads in the last election were “very relevant” as well, I’m sure. They didn’t work then. Why would these new ads work now?

“…its not been a very good week to be a Conservative or a supporter of them.”

Who are you trying to convince here? Yourself, I assume?

  • Gee Aaron.. is that the best defence of Harper you can come up with? These quotes are only 5 years old. Its VERY relevant to the debate. Whoever on the Liberal team found this “old” letter should be given the Order of Canada for exposing Harper for what he is – a climate change ranting sceptic who is only giving this green face because he knows he’s on the wrong side of the debate. You might also know Canadians can see thru this just as well as us “partisans”: a Decima Poll just came out that had a massive 64% saying Harper was doing this due to public opinion driving it, not because of genuine commitment.. only 17% of Conservative Kool-Aid drinkers thought he was being sincere with his government’s latest “Green” moves.

Between this and probably violating copyright laws to make their attack ads (and I hear now they may be pulling them), its not been a very good week to be a Conservative or a supporter of them.

  • Dredging up old Harper quotes didn’t work in the last election campaign. Why do you think it would work now?

Darren: I’m coming around to the idea that amateurish-looking negative ads can oftentimes be more effective than slick and professional ones. I thought the “beep beep” ads in the last campaign were bizarre, but they communicated a message effectively.

Jay, you’re so much smarter than me and, in fact, most other people. Now that I’ve said it, don’t feel as though you once again have to do so yourself.

That letter is all over the news and web. I tried to help a tory understand why too much CO2 is bad, its like banging your head against the wall. He kept repeating something about McGuinty saying we should ban water vapour. Explaining water vapour as a GHG was impossible. Same premise as CO2, too much creates a self propagating feedback loop that gets out of control.

These guys need to pick up a book instead of going to propaganda sites. The problem is these propaganda sites sound like common sense, and science goes way over their heads.

  • I love the send the “gift of money” at the end!

Yah, so they can produce half-a** Youtubish ads in five years to run during the SuperBowl!
