That would be what our Prime Minister is pleading with Canadians to do with him and his government, as he does a publicity stunt with his GST cut today in the GTA, which as Impolitical mentions, surely didn’t save any money for those living in that area. Economists have already panned this cut as being dumb economically, and others like myself have made the point that if Harper really wanted to score legitimate political points and credit, what he should have done is converted that 1% of GST he’s cutting into a carbon tax, and put it towards Green technologies and/or cleaning up our GHG emissions.

I’m of the opinion that with other more important and much more unfortunate events occurring elsewhere, this event isn’t going to get much play or attention out amongst the electorate, as does yet another death in Afghanistan.

  • Harpers 1% GST cut is, to the average Canadian, another pointless "getting it done" talking point. In his world everyone spends a decent portion of their income on taxable goods, in the real Canadian world that’s not quite the way it works…. if he spent more time in the same world most of us inhabit he’d know that.

  • I wonder what mayor Hazel thought of this stunt ?
May the New Year be a good one for you, Scott

  •
Hi Scott, First off, I totally agree with your "No to DMCA" symbol on the side of the screen.  Perhaps you could make it link to an anti-DMCA site when clicked? Or better yet, to Michael Geist’s site.
I’ll work on that – but til then, look at the same logo at the main Progressive Blogger page in the Announcements box. It DOES link to my "no to DMCA" article here, which contains an explanation and a link to Michael Geist’s site.

  • Whooee! Harpoon’ll enact a carbon tax just as soon as Dubya tells him to.

    Happy New Year, Scotty.

    Hi Scott,
First off, I totally agree with your "No to DMCA" symbol on the side of the screen.  Perhaps you could make it link to an anti-DMCA site when clicked? Or better yet, to Michael Geist’s site. More Liblogs, and even the Blogging Tories, should have such icons on their blogs.
Second, concerning the gst cut, the obvious response from Conservatives would be looking back at 1993 when Chrétien promised to eliminate (not merely reduce by 2 points) the gst altogether. What would be your response to such a comment? Would that have been considered a publicity stunt?
    All the best for 2008!
