Global Warming? What Global warming?

†That’s a socialist moneysucking scheme/myth! Or that’s what some folks on the rightwing claim.

Of course, we then read stories that shows quantitative evidence that the climate-change deniers† have no idea what they’re talking about, like this one in the Toronto Star today. The Arctic icepack is disappearing and shrinking so fast, it’s thwarting scientific experiments:

Massive shrinkage of the permanent ice pack last summer scuppered plans to run continuous measurements and experiments starting this month at a semi-permanent base out on the ice, south of Banks Island in the Western Arctic.

Part of the plan was to reach a semi-permanent base via snowmobile, while the ice-breaker was nearby in solid ice behind an ice-bridge that forms every year. The scientists however have been forced to relocate to another route and fly in intermittently; the problem is that there IS no solid ice or ice-bridge, because the ice has disappeared in massive amounts:

…the bridge hasn’t formed this year because ice floes are passing freely through the chokepoint into the Beaufort Sea, which is relatively unclogged because of the shrinkage in the ice pack. Scientists estimate that an unprecedented 1.3 million square kilometres of ice disappeared in the summer of 2007 from the permanent Arctic ice pack, the zone that remains ice-covered at the height of summer.

But of course, if you listen to the members of the climate equivalent of the Flat-Earth Society, there’s nothing to see here vis-a-vis climate change – its all a big scam to drain rich nations of their money and prevent companies from as making as much money as they can.

Scientific facts and real-life observations such as above prove otherwise, but these folks aren’t grounded in reality very well. Either that, or they simply don’t care.

Run for your life, we’re all going to boil in the rising sea water:

Shocking: Arctic Seals Vanishing – Ice Melting The Story:
The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consul Ifft, at Bergen, Norway.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met with as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm.

But wait, that story is from Nov 2nd, 1922.

I guess you guys missed the NASA report that showed the ice pack reduction was the result of wind patterns.
I work in the arctic, it’s been colder than hell up there this year. Two weeks ago on night shift the temperature was -78C with the wind chill. A co-worker just e-mailed me bitching about -60C. And it’s been like that for a long time. The ice road is thicker than it’s been for years.

  • Wow it’s like watching some old crazy tell you that the planet Niribu is going to kill us all in 2012… Oldschool, I suggest you do some reading.

  • Oldschool is busy today, this is the second blog he has been spamming with his nonsensical rants…

‘The Canadian Coast Guard ship Amundsen, crammed with labs and exotic scientific instruments, arrived in the Western Arctic in October to allow researchers to carry out the first-ever investigation of the changes in ice, water and atmosphere spanning four seasons.”

FIRST EVER!!! seems to jump out. This certainly is not an indicator of globull warming. But an examination of present conditions. Ice records in the Arctic have only been kept since 1972, a mere flash in the context of human history.
Remember when the RCMP vessel, now in a museum in Vancouver, sailed through the Arctic a hundred years ago. Couldn’t have been much ice then, its just a little wooden tub. Then of course there are my ancestors, Eric the Red and his band who settled in Greenland in the 9th Century.
Bottom line is . . . the Arctic has been much warmer than it is today . . . and of course when there was a mile of ice in Winnipeg . . . it was much colder than today.
Does anyone have any idea what the ideal temperature would be for the globe today?? Does anyone really believe that insignificant humans can control the earth’s temperature??
Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillipines errupted in the early 90’s and changed the weather for a couple of years . . . scientists said it emitted more polution and CO2 in a few days than man has made since the Industrial Revolution started . . . kind of puts it into perspective!!

“Therefore you should go to a country thatís a haven for pure capitalism! Simple yes?”

Funny you should mention . . . as I am presently considering moving from BC to Washington State.
The groceries are cheaper, the gas is 80c a litre, the taxes are much less, and although the medical insurance is more, the tax savings and the non-existant wait times more than make up the difference.
I saw a recent survey that stated, for every US Citizen that moves to Canada, 8 Canadians move to the US . . .

For more than 15 years I have watched local entrepeneurs move south accross the 49th parallel . . . because of Provincial and Federal taxes, red tape and needless restrictions. That is one reason Ontario industry is in such bad shape today. In the printing business, I could never afford to buy new high-tech equipment, cause the write-downs were too slow, the taxes too high. Several of my competitors are now in Washington state.

  • Oldschool is just ranting at this point. I can tell he didnt even bother to press the link regarding the "scientific evidence I put down in my original article.

Paladiea: you just have to learn to use the VERY SIMPLE TO USE† editor above the text box.. sheesh.. I put that in there so all people have to do is highlight the word and click the relevant thing they want to do rather then waste time typing out the whole html code. People apparently want to do things the hard way ūüôā

    Here’s a great site . . . with articles by real Climate Scientists . . .

    http://iceagenow.com/

They cover everything from Sun Spots to Glaciers. With scientists that even sign their names.

Socialism is plain silly . . . the economic engine of the Soviet Union was Socialism . . . where are they today?
Socialism was what created Muzolini and H1tler . . . N.A.Z.I. was the acronom for National Socialist Workers Party . . . in German of course.
Socialism doesn’t work . . . most democratic Euro countries are eliminating their social-ist programs today because they impede productivity and cost a fortune.
This is why the US is still the greatest country on the planet, in spite of current difficulties.

  • Darn non standard html formatting. ūüôĀ

  • Oh look I found the article. Oldschool neglects to read past the first paragraph to this area.

<em>If temperatures remain cold this winter, Langis said winter sea ice coverage will continue to expand. But he added that it’s too soon to say what impact this winter will have on the Arctic summer sea ice, which reached its lowest coverage ever recorded in the summer of 2007. That was because the thick multi-year ice pack that survives a summer melt has been decreasing in recent years, as well as moving further south. Langis said the ice pack is currently located about 130 kilometres from the Mackenzie Delta, about half the distance from where it was last year.</em>Winter ice expanding because it’s cold!? OMG! Call off the climate change scare LOL. We’ll see what happens in summer.

  • A lot of pretty quotes doesn’t make an argument Oldschool

  • Hey Oldschool. Do you have a cite for that? No? And please, Do show me where the global avg temperature is decreasing? That is unless you’re one of those people that the right claims to dislike and thinks that Toronto is the world!

I do like capitalism. In small doses. But you dislike socialism entirely. Therefore you should go to a country that’s a haven for pure capitalism! Simple yes?

Claude Allegre a French geophysicist, a member of both the French and the National — United States National Academy of Scientists. This is a quote: “The cause of warming” — this is a guy that marched up and down the street 10 years ago saying manmade gases are going to bring the world to an end. He now says that after studying the science, the new science: “The cause of warming is unknown. The proponents of manmade catastrophic global warming are being motivated by money.”

In November 2000 at the Hague, Jacques Chirac, then French President said: “Kyoto represents the first component of an authentic global governance”.

Hey Jason . . . now that the folks in TO are up to their collective asses in snow, and freezing as well . . . you have to admit . . . Harper’s climate programs are working really well! How much cooler would you like it? Maybe I should tell Steve that the folks in Ontario are cool enough . . . please stop your war on Gorbull Warming. . . . lol

  • Jason

"And hey, if you donít like socialism you can go to the capitalist paradise that is the States."

Well that’s a good response, if you don’t like it move to the US. Tell you what, if you don’t like capitalism then move to Iran. Makes about as much sense as your post.

    Polar Ice . . .

On the same day Al Gore received his share of the Nobel Prize for his work on climate change ó one of his main arguments is being challenged by a scientific fact. Gore has said that the northern polar ice cap could be completely gone in as little as seven years.

But Brazilís MetSul Weather Center reports the ice and snow cover in the Arctic have recovered to within one percent of normal ó even though the official start of winter is still more than a week away. And it says the southern polar ice cap actually has an additional 772,000 square miles of ice now ó compared to a year ago.

The debate is not about left and right . . . its about Science and Religion (Al Gore’s koolaid religion)!!!

  • Global warming is linked to climate change. And hey, if you don’t like socialism you can go to the capitalist paradise that is the States. Although I hear they’re in a bit of depression nowdays.

  • Jason

Climate change is real no question about that, the dispute is generally around what is causing climate change. Funny noone calls it global warming anymore, guess that’s so you can claim that unusually cold weather is also an indicator.

That being said Kyoto is a socialist money sucking scheme that won’t do diddly squat to lower carbon emmisions.

  • We researchers rarely have time to properly shower, rarely interact within their departments, and can barely make it to their classes to teach on-time, how could they possibly organize a grand conspiracy to transfer wealth to 3rd world nations via a global warming hoax involving the best and brightest minds from around the globe?

  • I look forward to seeing the usual rebuttals of skewed evidence, or the existance of conflicting evidence, or the purely natural/therefore do nothing answer, or even the the public isn’t willing to change crap, or the market isn’t there/isn’t profitiable†position, or too expensive….

HAHA!!† So many excuses the right wingers have…
