Hijinks at the Ontario Young Liberal Annual General Meeting?

Well, I thought I’d mention this since I did do a bit of blogging about the OYL elections at their AGM last year, and did report on some of the rancor involved with 2 different slates of candidates running. I thought with a unified slate this time going in that this would have erased that this year, but apparently not. We have several blogposts in the past couple of days detailing innuendo and rumours flying around of attempted vote stacking and delegate voter fraud and other nastiness.

Until we get actual proof and actual confirmation of said details and whether anything like this went on (and no, I don’t count anonymous posters leaving allegations in blog comment threads as proof) all I’ll say is that if these accusations of vote-stacking and such are true, I find it astounding that with 14 of 16 positions won by acclamation, it was felt necessary to go to these extremes to win the last 2 slots which happened to be contested by 2 independents. Why risk ruining your reputation and/or career in politics by trying to get a clean sweep? I don’t get that mentality.

I’ll further say if any of these rumours are true, then that’s one big mess the OYL and even the YLC (Young Liberals of Canada – the national organization) has on their hands. I also think the Ontario Liberal Party and the folks over at Queen’s Park who are involved with the OYL has to take a look at this (alleged) mess as well and do something about it.

My advice? Someone needs to shine the light on what`s been going on here, and change it.

PS РRegardless of what ends up being discovered, congrats to those 2 independents  РAlex Crombie and David Valentin Р  for winning election against tough odds (tougher if any of the above stories bear out). Hopefully, your fellow OYL executive will show good will and good faith in wanting to work with you.

  • Scott accused my comment of being brief via Facebook. Therefore allow me to elaborate on my one-word wonder:

Seriously? Someone tried to rig an Ontario Young Liberal election? Really?

(The rest of my comment can only be expressed by way of a disappointed head shaking.)

Here I skipped this AGM since I didn’t expect it to be all that crazy compared to last year.

But yes, someone needs to come out with the details, and explain it to all OYL members. I, for one, like politics, but I don’t like all the politics going on within the party sometimes. Stuff like this doesn’t help.

But mostly, the facts need to get out, since without the facts, rampant speculation will go on, and it’ll probably drag more people under the bus than needed to be dragged.

    Good advice.
