The Conservative political strategy of distraction being figured out, slowly..

..at least by the media.  Today, Jim Travers joined a so far select company of media folks (I’ve seen a couple of the Maclean’s journalists mention this tactic)  that have publicly pointed out that  all these stunts the Harper government has been pulling (which was listed by me yesterday), is being done in the hopes of distracting both the media and the public from the bad economic news that is hitting or about to hit, from headlines and stories such as this:

Canada falls hard into deep, widespread recession in final quarter of 2008

There’s no sign Canada is close to pulling out of an alarming economic nosedive that began last fall, resulting in the worst quarterly contraction in nearly two decades. Economic activity from October to December fell 3.4 per cent on an annualized basis, the biggest drop since the severe recession of 1991, according to Statistics Canada…. Given the record 129,000 job losses reported in January, some economists say the 2009 first quarter – which ends March 31 – could see Canada’s gross domestic product plunge another six per cent. That would rival the worst two months of the 1990-91 recession, which saw consecutive quarterly contractions of 3.3 per cent and 5.9 per cent.

This is why Harper and company are playing their games of distraction. The media have been slow to pick up on it, but perhaps that is turning around. That said, I think regular folks won’t be fooled by this attempt – or if they are, it will be momentary, as I doubt the government can keep this distraction game going for a sustained period, particularly when economists are predicting this economic downturn will be going on for quite awhile.

(On a related note, I also agree with our Liberal spokespeople who are saying any attempt by the Conservatives to repeat their negative-ad attack campaign against Ignatieff  with personal attacks, while this recession is ungoing, will severely backfire).

You have a gentleman who decides to return to Canada because liberal operatives convinced him in Boston that the party needed a new face- unassociated from the sponsorship stench.
His preferred country was left behind only because he is convinced the job of Prime Minister is his for the taking.

Gene why is it typical for people especially liberals to attack someone personally when you have no argument with what they are saying?

The Eastern beltway media is not representing how Canadians think. We all know the world in in recession and when that happens it involves us whether we like it or not we trade with the world. Why is the eastern media is so intent on bringing Harper down and hoping to replace him with that arrogant academic Ignatieff. Harper may not be Mr Personality but that guy has the personality of digger Odell. Go after him and tell Canadians how little time he has spent as a Canadian in his own country. and try looking at Layton who discards any approach the Conservatives bring to the economy out of hand before he reads it.You are only one little bit of the communication that goes on between bloggers and that is why the critics of Harper do not have the influence they may think they have with readers.

    Hey Scott

i think your first line should have read
….at least by the LIBERAL media.

but thats ok…we all realize that if it is not a liberal media outlet then it is shit here. isnt that what makes this country great..that we can get BOTH sides although I do have a problem with BOTH.

When I watch the news I want a unbiased non slanted view filled with facts. Today it seems that it goes either to the left or the right. I may not have a degree in politics but I am smart enough to wade through the crap and make my own decisions.
