After reading this, I wonder if Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt still thinks the lack of nuclear isotopes being produced up at Chalk River is “sexy”:

The Chalk River nuclear reactor could be out of service for the rest of the year, leaving nuclear medicine specialists across Canada scrambling to find isotopes for life-saving diagnostic procedures…Fixing the reactor’s heavy water leak – a job first expected to be completed by the end of summer – will now likely stretch well into the fall, a source said. The source said the delay is consistent with what AECL has been telegraphing for some time, much to the frustration of Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt.

Ah, so that answers my question a bit: instead of thinking the crisis is sexy, she’s frustrated. Is that progress on her part? Regardless, she’s been stonewalling this file, as shown from this excerpt:

Liberal critic MP Geoff Regan (Halifax West) said he heard from a reliable source that the reactor would be closed down until at least the end of the year, if not longer. “I hope it’s not but that’s what I am hearing,” he said in an interview. Regan said it was only a few weeks ago that Raitt and the head of AECL appeared before the Natural Resources parliamentary committee refusing to acknowledge that the repair would take much more than three months.

Someone needs to be held accountable here: the Conservative government was warned quite awhile ago about this reactor (18 months ago, I believe), and did nothing other then fire Linda Keen, then-chair of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Board.

She probably does still think it’s sexy. I mean, something can be frustrating AND sexy at the same time! My ex for example — extremely sexy, and yet every time he spoke he frustrated me to the point of wanting to beat him over the head with a baseball bat.

Seriously, though, I agree with you that someone needs to be held accountable at some point here. It seems like these guys are spending more time talking about the problem than actually fixing it. They should be moving heaven and earth to make it right and instead it’s all about trying to pass the buck or score points, depending on who’s point of view you’re looking at it from. Someone has to man up and fix this.
