That’s pretty rich, Mister Harper

He says he only became aware of the Suaad Hagi Mohamud case last week, after it’s been in the papers for a couple of months:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he’s happy Suaad Hagi Mohamud is back in Canada but admits he’s waiting for answers about her nightmare at the hands of Canadian officials. Harper suggested he became aware of the case only last week, even though her well-publicized plight of being stuck in Kenya had begun 11 weeks earlier. “When we became aware of the case last week, we asked our officials in various departments to give us some information,” Harper said at a news conference yesterday. “Obviously there (is) some troubling information here. It’s a complex case. I have asked my officials for a thorough review of the matter … (then) we’ll decide what further inquiry we do have to do.”

The cabinet minister directly in charge of the file – Lawrence Cannon – on July 24 proclaimed that she needed to do more to “prove” she was a Canadian. As pointed out here, other Cabinet ministers have been asked about her plight, and Liberal oppositon party leaders have been asked about this and made statements on it.

Harper is saying he missed that, or the PMO didn’t bother to brief him on it? The very same PMO that keeps a very tight lease on Cabinet Ministers and which seems to have to pre-approve what they say to the media? Harper and his staff were unaware Cannon made that July 24 pronouncement, or that other Cabinet ministers have been asked, or that opposition leaders of the Liberal Party have condemned it?

Please stop insulting Canadians’ intelligence. It’s more likely you intervened due to THIS:

The case has become a major embarrassment for the Conservatives amid criticism that the government is slow to assist Canadians in trouble abroad.

..and not because you weren’t aware.

    Two lessons here;
    1. Don’t count on embassy’s, embassy staff or Foreign Affairs for help, they’ve been hard ass bastards since this country began. If you get in trouble outside Canada your LAST line of defense is anything that says “Canada”, on the door. They take the attitude that you are guilty as charged.
    2. The core group of Harperites are leopards with unchanged spots. The overt and undercurrent of racism we used to here from them, remains; unspoken but it remains.
    Best you be white, anglo-saxon and protestant if you expect their help (money could buy you onto the bus but expect to sit at the back.)

  • Perhaps he did just become aware, Scott. When you spend all your time trying to figure out how to destroy a country, you overlook things.

    Probably still cheaper than Arar.
