Check out the interview that ex-hockey coach, current hockey analyst, and newly appointed Conservative Senator Jacques Demers gave to the Globe:
Mr. Demers… was a well-known face among the new crop of senators. He said he will continue working as a hockey analyst and put his mind to his new job.
“I’ve just been named a senator here, and I’m going to have to start following [federal politics],” he said in an interview.
I’m not listing this to attack Jacques: I applaud him for his honesty about his not having followed federal politics up to this point.
It reflects worse on Harper for picking him then it does Jacques for saying that last line. Harper picked his Senators and appointed them to the Senate, and they are expected to vote for him and his bills in the Senate whether the person knows anything about politics or not.

Memo to Senator Demers: Never be honest and candid. You will be tripped up by a Liberal every time.
@Joanne (T.B.), Memo to anyone from the Liberal party, Take Joanne’s comment, change the name to Conservative and take the same advice.
@Jon Pertwee, Ha! Point taken.
Senator Demers is certainly an upgrade over the likes of Dawson nd Dallaire and In fact the only appointment from Quebec of any merit in recent history was Senator Leo Kolber other than appointments made to enter cabinet.
“Never be honest and candid. You will be tripped up by a Liberal every time.”
Luckily Harper doesn’t have to worry about this dynamic.
@SteveV, I doubt it if Harper could be honest if asked “What is your name?”
