Congrats to Dr Eric Hoskins for winning St. Paul’s riding.

A very impressive win for Dr. Eric Hoskins in the provincial riding by-election of St. Paul’s, despite the efforts of the PC’s and NDP to claim there was a race here:

Despite efforts by the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats to stoke public anger over what they called a “tax grab” from the 13 per cent HST that takes effect next July, voters sent Dr. Eric Hoskins, 48, to represent them in the Legislature. Hoskins, who works as a family physician treating immigrants and has cared for children in combat zones around the world as a co-founder of the charity War Child Canada. He easily defeated Conservative challenger Sue-Ann Levy, 52, the city hall columnist for the Toronto Sun, New Democrat lawyer Julian Heller, 51, and realtor Chris Chopik from the Green Party. It was second-time lucky for Hoskins, whose first run at elected politics was in last year’s federal election against Tory cabinet minister Diane Finley in Haldimand-Norfolk. The married father of one also served as a policy advisor to former federal Liberal minister Lloyd Axworthy…Government sources told the Star that Hoskins is being groomed to sit in McGuinty’s cabinet.

I was pleased to help Eric out a bit in his federal attempt to unseat Diane Finley in Haldimand-Norfolk in the least federal election. I’m sorry to see him leave federal politics, but I wish him all the success he can muster in Ontario provincial politics – perhaps this is a first step for him to get to the federal level down the road. In the meanwhile, I’m pleased a progressive-thinking MPP has been added to the Ontario Liberal Party, who in my opinion can use a few more like-minded folks like Eric. (As an added bonus, it’s pleasing to see someone who writes for the Toronto Sun get defeated).
