Scrub it off

You’ll remember on Friday that I and some others pointed out that it was improper to have Harper’s staged piano stunt on an official Government of Canada website that was supposed to be talking about the Economic Action Plan. Many of the usual Conservative supporting apologists got on here and elsewhere and tried to dismiss it either as harmless fun or else trying to use the lame excuse about the Liberals having done it before – as if that somehow absolved Harper and the Conservatives.

Well, it appears the Conservative government took the criticism to heart a lot more seriously then its defenders, because as pointed out by BCL yesterday, they had completely scrubbed the Youtube ad off of their website – with BCL making a key point:

..next time a Tory spokesman tells you this is all trivial, point out that they felt it was harmful enough to their brand and image that they used the taxpayer’s dollars to pay someone to come in on the weekend and scrub their website.

Indeed – the Conservative government is very sensitive to anything they perceive might cause them political damage, and they obviously feel this issue does. It doesn’t excuse them however from trying these partisan stunts in the first place in the hopes no one in the blogosphere or news media would notice.

The conservatives have never referred to themselves as the government of Canada — for the first 2 years they were the “New Government of Canada” remember this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%27s_New_Government

Now they are Harpers Government. It’s been a spin from day one.

“Listen, we are the government … I don’t see why we can’t try to get credit for what we do. I hope we do so. There is nothing to be ashamed in that.”

Was Chrétien talking about his piano playing?

Great fun, that Conservatives are reduced to drawing similarites between Harper and Chretien. Is it really that bad?
