A brief complaint about CTV Olympic coverage

Will you please stop with the “When will Canada win it’s first gold medal on Canadian soil” shtick? It’s only Day 2 for pete’s sake. Will you also please stop trumpeting every Canadian athlete as a “gold medal favourite” (saying they’re a “medal favourite” would suffice)? You set everyone up in the country for a letdown if they “only” win silver or bronze. You’re also putting more pressure on our athletes then there already is.

Look at Jenn Heil for instance. She was under a lot of pressure last night to perform, and did so. She just got beaten by a superb performance by her American competitor. She won the Silver; quite an accomplishment in a sport where there have been no repeat Gold medal winners from Olympics to Olympics. Yet, the CTV interviewer afterwards was doing her interview in her best morbid tone possible trying to make it out like she had lost a Gold, and asking in dismaying tones stuff like “when oh when will Canada ever win a Gold on home soil” (and credit to Heil for handling it with grace).

Here’s hoping we win a gold soon so we can put that anxiety of CTV commentators to rest.

This is great stuff guys. I can’t wait for Carla’s response. Keep it coming. I truly feel that CTV let down this country with it’s Olympic coverage. Hopefully by the time London rolls around they will have given their collective heads a shake and make it more about the sport and less about the fluff.

  • Ok these are my last words to be spoken, as i have been informed by my superiors, not to reply -or to do so on my own time, or my services will no longer be needed , well not that serious , however will be reprommanded for responding. Personally neither Jon or Carla are worth the consequences, of working at company for the last 10 yrs -and to have that tarnished. Yes consider that an insult

    • Jon Pertwee

@cynthia, Oh please Cynthia, that was the weakest response in three threads ever. You continue to play the hurt role even though you came in all cocky and aggressive. See you can dish it out Cynthia, but you can’t take it.

As for your co-workers. Who really cares what they think. Really. I don’t know them and neither does anyone but yourself so congratulations – your coworkers enable your bad habits and obviously are “supporting” you so you will shut up and do your job.

It’s garbage like this – “Just shocks me as one of the little guys – whom contribute in making this country – what it is today GREAT-” that makes me respond. What makes you so much more “one of the little guys” than anyone else? Is it because our opinions dont match yours or the talking points of the Harper government that make us elitists? Just because people don’t agree with you Cynthia doesn’t make you an elitist. In fact surrounding your desk with you co-workers to guffaw at someone who criticized you puts you squarely into the realm of redneck elite, but you probably never thought that putting hickish behaviour and prejudice against education couldn’t possibly be imposing some form of elitism onto others.

Now be a good worker bee and get back to work. Seriously, responding to blogs at work and then drawing the attention of your entire coworkers to it. How stupid is that?

How is you being threatened with termination an insult to Carla or me? Now that is incredibly stupid. So if you get fired should I be offended? How dare cynthia’s boss from the truck stop dare fire her? What an insult to ME!!!!

      Thanks for the laughs anyways.

I was one of the people who left a comment early on. Most of the opinions are concerning the morning show with the MTV Dweebs and the less than proffesional journalists that were on every morning. Yes Lisa Laflemme did get on nerves but not really the issue.

I had to go on to CTV internet to see a replay of the Canadian Gold in figure skating. Whey not show that in the morning instead of people laughing at the athletes and making fun of them. I was truly disgusted by the morning journalists attitude towards these games. Hey they were like on vactaion and getting paid for it and to make fun of people.
        How Canadaian is that.

I felt that the coverage was good and we could watch many different sports at the same time. I think everyone agrees with that. Great job to our athletes and they way they showed the world what a Canadian Athlete is all about. Class!!!

Everyone is allowed to have their opinion. I have received every email of those that replied after me and never once felt that I had the right to tell them they are wrong.
Their opinion just like you have yours Cynthia. I think you should appologize!

But that is me being Canadain again.

  • Ok now that all here, at work – co-workers, supervisors and management have read comments made from start to finish, all were wondering if Jon stopped paying attention after his school years , because he obviously did not , nor did he understand all that was said. As for Carla, ditto, well truthfully everyone laughed, at your public forum of speaking as you feel the need to insult to make a point.
So, that all being said, both of you should go back to the very beginnning where this started- note all that i typed , read it try and understand it , try very hard , because at no time did i single out someone or insult anyone, to make a point. Please feel free to go back, and if either one of you find that i did personally make fun of , call someone a name , well i will apologize. I think both of you are confused , very confused, The only comments made, were that of how well CTV did on the coverage of the olympics (and my agreement with others regarding) and my disagreement with personal insults towards LisaLaflamme, and as Canadians we should be focused in on one concern and that is – supporting our athletes
    So enjoy reading,

    • Jon Pertwee

@cynthia, I just re-read your posts. I didn’t know you had such a Lisa Laflamme fetish. Still, you really didn’t say anything other than some meandering cheerleading about how much you love news presenters.

Truly strange, why comment if you have so little to say? Was it to show off to your coworkers?

Supervisors and management? You’re job is too management heavy. So do you report to your supervisor or manager?

  • @jon – At no time did i ever make a smart , cocky remark, read back, remember it was you that said-(I butcher the English language) so how could i be smart? if it makes you feel more of a human to win, ok you win, feel better????
as for Carla, if it makes you feel better calling people names , well i hope you feel better.
I came on this forum to voice opinion on people that seem to use person attacks on people to make a point , making fun of people does not make anyone rightt – or better of a person. No one should say something personal toward someone. if you dont have anything good to say about someone, you should not say it all!!!

  • Carla

boohoo..woe is me…and the #1 favorite catchphrase of Canadian White Trash is…..(drum roll))………”Whatever”….

Yes, “Whatever” is the only response generated by the 14 synapses that make up the brain of white trash…tell the truth, they reply with “Whatever”…remind them of the responsibility they ignored, their reply is “Whatever”….point out the social responsibility they don’t follow when they let their dogs bark at 1 AM, they reply with “Whatever”….

The winner of the white trash of the year award goes to……….Cynthia “Whatever” Canuck…adress, 3rd dirt road off concession 5, Hickville, Alberta… :) :) :D :P

  • @jon.. you have no idea what my response means, Thought you said and I quote “but I paid attention in school, That being said, one would think you could figure it out,,,,
As far as butchering the english language , well considering the cards that have been dealt to me in life, i think i am doing just fine, A wise lady once told me , do not judge or make fun of someone , until you have walked a mile in their shoes, Well Jon-that mile was actually 3 1/2 years of my life , as i lost most memory and alot that was learned previous…..so considering the circumstance, which i would rather not go into , as i would probably need more than my lunch hour (well half hour lunch) to expain… I hope you do not ever have to experience the learning cycle all over again, because of circumstances beyond your control.. Maybe Jon you also, should take The advice that was once given to me by that wise old lady… Good Day…

    • Jon Pertwee

@cynthia, Cynthia, we all have problems and we overcome them. I understand that 3 1/2 years may have been a challenge for you but do not assume for one moment that I have not had problems myself and have overcome them. See, I don’t come online acting all smart and cocky and provide an ill-thought, poorly formed argument.

Relying on a story to attract pity does not improve your argument or strengthen it. It just means you lost.

  • @ Jon- whatever!!!!!!
you know the saying, cant beat em, join them, but you single me out , that is fine..
as far as you paying attention in school,
    Good 4 u…………

    • Jon Pertwee

@cynthia, thanks for proving my point. I have no idea what your response actually means. Good luck with that babble. I’m sure it’s getting you far.

  • You question my dashes- hey at least my comments are that of my own- why do you have to use quotes (statements) made from another??– what did you do- copy and paste alan’s comment-and as far as calling anyone losers- not once have i- come out and said- read- back-Yes you are corrct and stating WE DON’T HAVE TO LIKE WHAT WE ARE BEING PRESENTED WITH! And democracy guarantees that we can express this opinion in a public forum, but downgrading others as most have done with ctv-doesnt make you correct-democracy also gives you the privelage of switching the channel, Fox says it all- read back- and hey back to democracy, democracy gives me the right to use dashes commas etc… so if you dont like it – i will say again switch the channel Oh by the way I love MAPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Jon Pertwee

@cynthia, you love Maple and butchering the English language obviously. Oh yeah I’m also an average working Joe Canadian but I paid attention in school.

  • Carla

Cynthia, obviously you have not read too far back…and-whats – with – these – annoying – dashes – you- are – so fond -of —–

Here is my reply to another mapletreehugger:

The issue here is the lack of professionalism exhibited by CTV and ultimately Bell canada who owns CTV. We have no right insulting athlees, what they are wearing, theur choice of music, etc…

In the past, when we tuned into the olympics, on ONE CHANNEL, we were able to follow pretty much all the events, as it happened or with a small delay.

CTV is covering fluff more than the event, with too many background biographies and documentaries and unprofessional unqualified commentators.

That is and has been our concern and complaint.

WE DON’T HAVE TO LIKE WHAT WE ARE BEING PRESENTED WITH! And democracy guarantees that we can express this opinion in a public forum.
For you to insult us by calling us losers because we do express our opinion, says a lot about your character.
I could wear your coat and insult you back just as easy.
I have met you many many times in my life. You are the one who lives in a small world, you haven’t ventured too far from your cocoon universe, think kraft dinner is gourmet food. Watch “Idol” and ancing with Stars” and Dr. Phil religiously and do whatever your god Oprah and Ellen tell you to do. You drive a mini van, have a dog, cottaging or camping is your main holiday, and probably consume television beers, Coors, Blue or Canadian.

See, we too can insult. :)

  • Fox Windsor

Yeah I’m a 22 year old college student who works at a Starbucks. CTV doesn’t own Starbucks do they? I’m just giving my opinion on what I saw these past two weeks, that’s it. Sure, I found 3 of the commentators annoying but it didn’t take away from watching our great athletes performing every day.

  • coming from one that is not-a ctv employee- just your average joe- working canadian- i stick by- as previous spoken- and that is -i truly enjoyed ctv coverage- of the olympics- one would think that all the downgrading given towards ctv- it makes one believe -might be cbc employees- Just shocks me as one of the little guys – whom contribute in making this country – what it is today GREAT- and now we can also comment-GOLDEN -(pun attended)-the name calling – toward particular- commentators- pretty immature- !!!!

  • Carla

Seems the CTV/Bell employees got wind of this forum and had to stand up for the boss LOL.

  • Well said -FOX
Finally someone with a reality check-
    i agree 110 percent-
CTV- should be commended not held with controversy”-as previously noted-
    Kudos CTV- !!!!!!
    & thank you ……….

  • Fox Windsor

CTV’s coverage has been great. I loved the all the different video montages, The Difference Makers, Olympic Journey, How Tough Are These Sports. It was all really well done.

CTV has allowed us to watch every Olympic event through a handful of different English and French channels. If you missed a certain event it didn’t matter because it would be replayed all night long on the other networks. We got maybe 2,000+ hours of incredible coverage. We’re lucky we got to experience every moment of this great event from the combined efforts of CTV, TSN, and Rogers SportsNet.

One more thing, Jay Onrait was awesome on Olympic Morning!

  • joanne drummond

Only complaint with CTV was that they did not post an onscreen notice that events were replays. It was annoying along with guides that showed events that were on hours later. Closing ceremonies were less than spectacular and our hero hockey boys chose to spend a quiet evening with their families???? Are they nuts? this is the olympics and they should have marched in with our other athletes that we are so proud of. That was a load of crap. Maybe they were counting their money! What a huge disappointment that was.
    Joanne

  • Lisa Marie

CTV – Canadian Television Vampires….It seems they were definitely out for blood with whatever “controversy” they could muster up.

  • Well now that the olympics are over-
some still feel the need to bash ctv- comments such as :
Last question, why has Lisa The Phlegm been on the tv at all? This prissy bimbo is NOT a sports reporter and just makes me change the channel when I see that self-serving cow on. Wake up CTV. If it wasn’t for Sportsnet and the Toronto Sports Network, your coverage would have been worse than NBC’s!
WOW- you need to wake up or grow up– and get over it- could it be that one is well aware of the intergrity of lisa LaFlamme- and beauty- and might be jealous-??
anyway let it rest- all- as far as the majority of canadians are concerned- CTV did a faboulous job – kudos to all-
And congratulations to All Winning Athletes- whether Canadian or Not!!
This Great Country is definitley GOLDEN!!!!!!!

  • Carla

…pee your name in the snow…..wow, we just insulted 9/10ths of the world, where such matters are giant taboo’s…way to go Catherine!

  • bill blaylock

I THINK BRIAN WILLIAMS IS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO OLYMPIC COVERAGE. NOT ONLY IS HE VERY WELL INFORMED AND KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT THE EVENTS , BUT HE TELLS THEM TO THE REST OF US CANADIANS AS THOUGH HES SITTING IN OUR LIVING ROOMS. HE IS WARM , CHARMING AND NOT AFAID TO HONOUR OTHER COMPETATORS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, THE WAY THAT SOME FOREIGN ANCHORS SEEM TO BE. WE ARE EXTREMELY LUCKY , AS CANADIANS , TO HAVE BRIAN AND I HOPE HE CONTINUES TO ANCHOR OUR OLYMPIC COVERAGE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

  • Schlemp Gustavsson

Please bring back the CBC for the next Olympics without Brian’ Here’s my opinion ‘ Williams. He is a reporter right? His job should be simply reporting right? Why do we get this arrogant ass’s opinion 5 times every time his ugly mug is on the screen?

CTV’s coverage has been nothing short of awful. Can’t believe I had to go to the internet 2 dozen times to get starting times for events. Like the Men’s Bronze medal hockey game for example. Those fools at CTV will have you watch 8 hours of rerun coverage in the hopes you actually catch a live event.

That and they give us 14 Bombardier ads every 1 to 2 hours about a company that sells trains and planes to the general Public? How insulting is that? After how many billions gifted that moron company from the tax payer and this is what and how they advertise? Have they sold a single train with these ads? A single plane?

    Awful!

Last question, why has Lisa The Phlegm been on the tv at all? This prissy bimbo is NOT a sports reporter and just makes me change the channel when I see that self-serving cow on. Wake up CTV. If it wasn’t for Sportsnet and the Toronto Sports Network, your coverage would have been worse than NBC’s!

ctv olympic coverage–been pretty good–a lot of filler early–certain announcers I turn the volume off and watch the picture only — the worst are darren dutchyshen and marble mouth jennifer hedger (i think those are marbles in her mouth ?),pierre mcguire and ben mulroney–definite volume muted- It is great when 2 european teams play so we dont have to listen to mcguire’s run of the mouth detailing every player and which american university or major jr a team out of canada they are connected with–pierre go for a beer for a period or 2 and let us enjoy the game- there is a reason womens hockey doesnt get the same coverage as mens–womens hockey is like hamburger helper, not very good and the 2 teams that dominate are equal to 14 yr old boys AAA bantam level–mediocre at best– When canada wins the womens hockey gold cassie campbell goes on as if they just landed on the moon -a major accomplishment,68 goals for and 2 against,blah,blah.. ?? sad to listen to–more mute to kill the volume.

  • Johhny Canuck

I like what they have done with some of the visual elements of the games. “I Believe” – well, enough said about that.

Re: CTV Hosts. They have been abominable. Crass, sarcastic, flippant, phoney, dismissive, arrogant, douchy…this list goes on and does not include the words professional or appropriate.

I will hold up one viewing experience to summarize my feelings. After covering the emotional press conference of the Canadian female skeleton racer who ended fifth and was crushed by it, CTV switched over to their next story “What country do the hottest men/women come from”

CTV brings you the Olympics via TMZ and ETalk…shudder.

  • Mary

As host broadcaster, CTV could set up 1000 robotic cameras, and their “job” would be done.

My feeling about the hosting is very ambivalent. While I would like to say nice things about CTV’s coverage the reality is when you need to rely on Sub-Par, “Cable TV” personalities, you have to remember there is reason why they are on Cable TV to begin with.

CTV’s “consortium” bid meant that these Olympics could actually give new opportunity to talent outside of the same old, same old at CBC. Instead, CTV failed to groom talent in the years prior to 2010.

JAY ONRAIT on the Olympic Morning has a sense a humour and while he wins hands down over DIANA SWAIN at CBC when they tried to “fit” her in as an Olympic Host, ONRAIT is better suited as a late night talk show host or comedian, NOT an Olympics host. This isn’t stand-up comedy, it’s the OLYMPICS !

JAMES DUTHIE, on the Olympic Daytime, however, looks uncomfortable and a fish out of water. I don’t watch Cable, so I just don’t “get” what all the hoop-la over this guy was supposed to be. The year he was apparently nominated for a Gemini must have been a realy bad or slow year, because this guy could not hold a candle to his colleague DAVE HODGE, or BRIAN WILLIAMS. Not sure why the “consortium” did not chose Dave Hodge over him? Bad decision.

Which brings me to “JESSICA & DAN” (aka “The Village Idiots”).

Look, if we wanted MuchMusic or MTV, we would have asked Vancouver to bid on the Grammys not the Olympics. Today, they were talking about “condoms in the athletes village and how stress gets them horny”. Come on, I’m IN the “demographic” that CTV apparently wants to appeal to, and their chatter is so irrelevant to the 2010 Olympics, keep them on shows like eTalk with BEN MULRONEY and “LAINEY” (I have a last name) LUI. Really – does Canada want to listen to these two Village Idiots every morning? … three, if you toss in Jeannie Becker fawning over the Next One …

I WILL say that I HAVE gained more respect for Lainey Lui, at least she is articulate. Dan Levy if your dad was not Eugene Levy, what would you do for a living? Honestly.

The “TSN panel” – Sorry guys, but CBC Hockey Night in Canada does it infintely better. And had I not had to go to Google to find out who PIERRE MCGUIRE was/is (he’s an American to boot) – wouldn’t have the foggiest who he is. Why do we need Americans (McGuire, Ray Farraro) telling us “expert” colour commentary. If this was Olympics Football, then sure, but come on – Hockey is CANADA’s game.

Vancouver: in spite of all the tragedies (luge fatality, J Rochette’s mom, now Koenig’s son suicide – Which CTV STILL has NOT reported, but was done on the other networks, already) – you did a great job hosting. It’s shame that CTV’s “consortium” did not live up to expectations aside from providing live feeds. Thank goodness for Brian Williams (who must be embarrsssed himself), or this would be a total dud.

  • unprofessional unqualified commentators.
WOW- not well said at all – but hey– difference of opinion–
which we all are intitled to:
My opinion- and that’s all it is-
as Canadians we should be focused in on one concern and that is – supporting our athletes -in any way – shape — or form—not taking the time- to disrepect- others that make this country – what it is !
    The Best in the World!
    Go Canada Go!!!

I agree we all should be proud to live here and cheer with gusto for our Canadian atheletes…However Cynthia are you leading me to beleive you condone the offside comments such as reference to ‘gottchies/gonch… Hairspray…Pointing out alleged crushes… Asking if a sweater comes in Man size… This all this morning!… remember this is the news team we have to represent our hard working dedicated Canadian Olympians… dont you think maybe CTV could have thier broadcasters treat our competitors with respect? and not make out Canadians to be backwoods rednecks with no couth on national telivision…. for the entire world to pass judgement on??? Notice the professional ( Seamus) was sent to interview the King and Queen of Norway… not some potty mouth (wanna be Don Cherry)…. in after thought here I would be comfortable leting kids watch Cherry…he is loud… however he does not cross the line with small minded vulgarity ‘ In the absence of knowlege…vulgarity will always rear its ugly head’ hmmmmmmmmm again you decide

Wow, what a bunch of losers. I guess most of you spend the time at your computers when most of us who are loving the country, the coverage and Vancouver are working. I have been glued to my TV every evening and any chance I get during he day. I love to hear about the celebrities, the musical entertainment and seeing the fashion sense of those who are there in the know because I can’t BE there.

Paula, the fact that we have an opinion that diffewrs from yours makes us losers? Should I insult you back saying, “Paula is a loser, she cares more about what some celebrity is wearing and eating over how a prosessional event is being presented?”

The issue here is the lack of professionalism exhibited by CTV and ultimately Bell canada who owns CTV. We have no right insulting athlees, what they are wearing, theur choice of music, etc…

We can all thank small minded protectionist policies for this trash – there would be no ctv without the crtc – and these hacks would be serving the poutine instead of commenting on eating it at 6am! My program guide tells me I am tuning into the WInter Olympics – yet no sport…clowns!

By the way – newscasters are one small step up from Realtors – they don’t actually do anything – they just tell us what others have done and what their/their network’s opinion is on those acts. Who says they should ever be listened to!

    • Kimmer123

Well Dylan you gave me a giggle… you do make a point… the CRTC is our demi-god ( for lack of better words) and I have found over the years they weild less and less power…. brash public personalitys are taking advantage (ie; just a few moments ago CTV allowed part of thier coverage to comment on the amount of condoms Vancouverite attenders are able to recieve!!!)….. as for newscasters… well they do serve a purpose as we all tune in to watch what they report ..seeing as we cannot attend… I don’t think I am alone in verbalizing my discontent regarding the ‘verbal diahrea’ CTV is allowing … they look foolish and seemingly run by amatures

      • Kimmer123

Credit where credit is due… Bev,Sheamus and Jeff are still holding the bar high with total professionalism.. all the while dodging the child like comments being made by thier temporary fellow commentators – hats off – There is no excuse for bad manners…period

  • Kimmer123

This is ridiculous …. Jay on Olympic mornings… has a personal attack going on with Seamus…I caught the ‘zipper’ comment … and just not 5 minutes ago Jay made a jibe at a sweater gifted to Seamus by the King and Queen of Norway about said sweater coming in ‘mens’ size’…I have been a broadcaster… and I tell you what… blatant flipancy bordering on vulgar is/and will be dealt with… Jay.. you have already sunk your own ship…shame on you CTV, this is your debute… you are allowing a small minded no-talent broadcaster like Jay to set your bar world wide … egg on your face ….I remember CBC… not in all the years of watching thier coverage did I ever have the inkling to question the integrity of the news reporters hmmmmmmmm you decide

I’d like to comment on the flowers. I thought they might be prairie flowers. I think the flowers are beautiful and unique and I was intrigued as to what they were, because I love flowers. And now that I see them up even closer, I like them even more. Green mums… how unusual. I like the “going green” theme they can represent. And wouldn’t a laurel wreath be green? I think it was a lovely thoughtful choice of flowers. I’m wondering about the folded-over leaves.. are they from the berries perhaps? A friend commented they look like corn husk leaves. I think the flowers are well-constructed as well. And yes, a wonderful keepsake. I would be thrilled to have one. Tonight in the Women’s Canada/US hockey game, the US won silver. One of the US team members threw the flowers into the fans’ seats. What was she thinking… where the flowers not good enough, or pretty enough? Was it her disappointment at the outcome of the game… not having the fame? I felt a little ticked off and embarrassed. Was she throwing the bridal bouquet to the next potential olympian? Who knows. I hope someone asks her what her intentions were. The flowers represented a token of her athletic prowess and Olympian status, and she just literally threw them away as soon as they were handed to her! Is she so disappointed that she’ll never appear in an Olympic Game again? Good! Yah right! She’ll be back again. The Olympics should be more about personal best than the colour of medal you win. Instead, could she not have handed the flowers to some Olympic volunteer who put in so many hours for her event? Or given them to her family for their support? I could go on and on but won’t. Couldn’t someone like NBC or CTV give the story of the flowers so we’d all (including the Olympians who will receive a transcribe of their event) be much better educated? No I guess not… not important… what a shame!
Come on CTV… I’m countin’ on ya!!!

  • Rob ,Rural Ontario

I think that the coverage has been great! I cant recall watching as much Television in the evenings as we have in our house this week. I don’t watch sports all weekend so I dont know USA from Canadian coverage styles and I never get hyped on watching Oylmpics but I have enjoyed watching these games because of the CTV coverage. Being able to turn to TSN or Sportnet to watch a full sport while the summary is on CTV is better than all CBC. The morning personalities with Jay and Seamus have been funny. I have never heard of Lainey Lui but she is great too. The interns, Rick Hansen pieces and all athelete focus stuff has been good. Gold medal from our house. Sorry no haters here.

  • Rooco

I feel compelled to add more complaints towards CTV for their coverage of the games.

The problem with their coverage started on the week-end of the Superbowl. Every commercial spot was about the Olympics and “the story” and “the gold medal” and on and on and on including that theme that I just want to blow up just like they blew up those dico albums in Chicago back in the 70s. Just overkill, enough already.

Another annoyance is Jessi Cruickshank, why her? She should stay at MTV where she belongs, but not on the main CTV network, she’s embarrassing.

On the positive side, Brian Williams is doing a great job of keeping the sporting aspect of the games pleasant for viewers to follow and I have to say that I have not missed much of a beat regarding the actual sports itself. It’s all the side shows that I am not enjoying on CTV.

All in all, if I could grade the coverage of the games, sports coverage B+, advertising F, Animators C and Jessi Cruickshank F
    Overall C-

  • Nostrildumasse

Hey is anyone else tired of seeing the TSN version of the hockey “VIEW”…every frigging second back to you Whoopie, Is it me or is Ctv turning into the ‘American’ coverage style…that we use to judge so harshly. The great part about the Olympics is that you get to see athletes that are generally not highlighted during world cup/world championships (because they are not ranked in the top 10 of their discipline)..don’t get me wrong, you will pull back a stump if you try to pry me away from the game….maybe it’s just Nick Kypreos; he always looks constipated.
Did you notice Beverley looks alive now, I’m starting to have sympathy for the woman sitting next to Jay (yes..we have no bananas…)Onrait…Me thinks he will be the big winner in 2010 as far as the “battle of the anchors” go…the dude is funny,contemporary,well-versed and has a freaky eyebrown bird-like falconesque nose thing happening and works well with the younger crowd.
Go Canada Go… lots of great moments what are your standouts?

CTV’s coverage is incredibly crass … did they purposely choose the most annoying announcers they could find? Brian Williams and Jay What’s-His-Name drive me to the brink of insanity … so much so that I turn to NBC coverage. Wow CTV, do you have any idea of the amount of time, the sacrifice these athletes have made just to get to the Olympics? Enough of the doom & gloom! It’s time to celebrate our athletes! Your coverage is a huge national disappointment, not the athlete’s performances!

…and that jingle….that endless annoying jingle 45 times an hour, the Bell/CTV olympic theme…like nails on a blackboard!

    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm
    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm
    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm
    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm
    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm
    da-da-dum-da-dada-dummm

Seriously, I caught myself humming it in Loblaws…got me through the line faster.
for some reason this tune reminds me of “Don’t pay the Ferryman” by Chris DeBurgh…when the brass instruments get their solo, 80′s flashback….Clara Hughes what an awesome athlete with such a beaming energy…she’s like a cabbage patch doll…Kudos to the Canadian Women

Good Lord, what was CTV thinking, was it written into the morning show hosts and entertainment airheads contracts that they had to be on the Olympic coverage teams. As a long time sports enthusiast, participating in many and watching almost every sport on TV, I have never been so disgusted with the coverage that seems to be more focused on the entertainment part than the athletes and the events. I hope some of the top executives are blasted with all the comments that people have been writing and that someone at CTV will acutally have the nerve to set up a venue where we can all officially complain to CTV execs. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that Cdn. athletes give it 150% all year and wouldn’t be at the Olympics if they did not qualify in their event…….so why the heck come down on them when they haven’t won a gold….does CTV and the media not think that Cdns can figure it out, that if an athelete generally wasn’t performing in the top three for the last couple of years in their event that the chances of them winning a gold is slim. To all our athletes, I hope you don’t suffer any further embarrassment of your sport by CTV’s coverage that would prefer to know more about how to party than the actual sport. If we were ever blessed again to host the Olympics, CTV please hire me, I will do a much better job than those annoying entertainment people and probably save you a lot of money!!!!

I don’t think many people who are at work all day realise what trash is going on in the morning show. Those Much Music and E talk people are so inappropriate during Olympic coverage. The women are airheads who speak their “valley girl speak”. everything is about sex or maiking fun of people. Much Music has their own coverage on their own channel, and their teenage fans can watch the hot tub stuff and body shooters. Why we have to see them is a mystery. Many families who tune in in the morning must be disgusted by what is being said at that time of day. So many people I know are angry. I would imagine that some of the regular anchors are not happy with the way things are going. Most of the people on seem to think it is the comedy network and that they have to be witty every single moment – and they fail at that miserably.NBC has some light moments, but it is mostly about sports. When I see those bimbos I immediately go to NBC.

critisim of the games by the media is similiar to the damaging pictures of the t.t.c.,once they smell blood they can`t get enought of it.a billion $ tied up in this had better projeck a positive immage.it`s coming out of our pockets in the end.look at the montreal games,i experienced that first hand…

The core problem with the Consortium’s coverage is its absolute lack of any journalistic credibility. After the announcement of the successful bid by CTV/Rogers/TSN for the Vancouver Olympics, I for one was pleased with this outcome. Though the CBC had been doing a reasonably adequate job in the past, the fact that their operation is financed to the tune of more than $1 billion a year in tax payer money galls me to no end and I was looking forward to the private sector showing us how it should be done.

When it was announced that Keith Pelley had been hired away from his job as President of the Toronto Argonauts (now there is a stellar credential!) to head up the Consortium, I started to feel some serious doubts about what Vancouver 2010 would be like on television. Prior to the Argos, Mr. Pelley had been working in the U.S. for Fox Sports and for those who are familiar with the buffoons and morons that are employed by Fox in the U.S. and the gimmick-filled incompetence of their sports coverage, I figured we needed to be prepared for the worst. When subsequently CBC lifer Brian Williams scurried over to the Consortium to ensure job continuity (what else was he going to do besides being Don Cherry’s floozy on his radio show?), the dark picture was complete.

The subsequent announcement by Mr. Pelley of “our esteemed network talent” (a clear indication of Mr. Pelley’s bottom dwelling quality standards) spoke therefore volumes about the kind of television coverage we could be looking forward to. All the on-air personalities were culled from CTV, Rogers and TSN and since these networks’ viewing audiences are largely made up of the WalMart nation demographic build on programming such as Idol, Survivor, Desperate Housewives, MMA, Poker, NASCAR and Hockey, it was obvious that any form of quality journalism, analysis, background reporting, etc. would be absent from the Olympic broadcasts.

Your comments are ridiculous that it’s illegal to speak French in Vancouver, where do you get that information? it’s embarassing listening to CTV, I rather listen to the Americans at least they don’t laugh at us.

  • Hank

Worst coverage since Games are televised….why do we want to watch CTV and all the has been on Canada AM….Is Lisa Laflamme the best you can get???

    Give us a break…

  • MacIvor

bravo! well said! We agree. We agree. We agree!!!

  • Alan

was my attempt at sarcasm :) :) :)

    • @Alan, I am thoroughly disappointed in the lack of coverage of women’s hockey…… u r always pushing men’s hockey which is ok but even though I am not a big hockey fan I cannot help but notice the lack of mention of the women’s hockey team which I must remind you they have NO LOSSES????????

    • Paula Bromilee

Wow, what a bunch of losers. I guess most of you spend the time at your computers when most of us who are loving the country, the coverage and Vancouver are working. I have been glued to my TV every evening and any chance I get during he day. I love to hear about the celebrities, the musical entertainment and seeing the fashion sense of those who are there in the know because I can’t BE there. I actually feel that I have attended with the wonderful team effort. Shamus, Bev and Brian, Lisa et al, are representative of this country and I love their humour, sensitivity and professionalism not to mention their gorgeous designer clothing! Keep up the great work CTV and Go Canada! You make us proud!

      • Thank you so much Paula-WEll SAID!!!-wow what a bunch of critical -??? lets take some shots at ctv- give it up =all of you- dont like what you are watching then switch the channel- freedom -of– !!!
