Ann Coulter Ottawa 'cancellation' a mere publicity stunt?

Some of my progressive blogging colleagues think so. Part of that is to do with some of the media covering the event reporting they felt it was more to do with poor organization of the event, and that the claim that there were ’2000 protesters there’ being overblown, as well as the so-called security concerns being overblown.

As Dr Dawg noted at his above link, there’s so far not been an official police report of any kind describing reports of any physical violence, or arrests, or reports of weapons. We only have hyper-conservative activist Ezra Levant saying so, and pardon me if I take his word with a big mountain of salt.

Speaking of Ezra and Annie, two fun quotes for you, repeated elsewhere already, but amusing to quote again nevertheless in the wake of both claiming the left are politically persecuting them.

First, Ann Coulter: “They’re [Democrats] always accusing us of repressing their speech. I say let’s do it. Let’s repress them. Frankly, I’m not a big fan of the First Amendment“.

Freedom of speech for me, but not for thee, eh Anne?

Next, free speech “champion” Ezra Levant on anti-war MP George Galloway being barred from travelling here and expressing his opinion, as noted by Canadian Cynic:

[British MP George] Galloway is not a Canadian citizen; he does not have a right to come to Canada (nor any other rights guaranteed to our citizens). He would be a guest, and he is being turned away for security reasons… I don’t see this as a free speech issue; I see it as a sovereignty issue — keeping out an undesirable foreigner who has no right to be here, and who boasts about violating our criminal code.

Good riddance…… my main point is that Galloway has no “right” to come to Canada. He’s not Canadian. I’m all for his free speech — elsewhere.

Apparently, Ezra only believes foreign folks are getting persecuted when they’re not allowed to speak if he happens to agree with their POV. No hypocrisy there, eh Ezra?

UPDATE: Kady O’Malley lists the different contradictions of what supposedly transpired last night, and seems to be leaning against the version of the cancellation put forth by Ann, Ezra and other organizers of last night’s aborted event.

  • I thought a little Ann Coulter parody might be in order: click here

The general opinion being, too much protest = cheap publicity

    Happy news, right wing style.

  • I do think that Harper wanted Coulter to speak. Harper and his ilk want the universities in the national capital to be seeded with ultra-right students and pockets of intolerant culture. First, it makes him look respectful and restrained when he does the deadly hatchet jobs on progressive or honest or educated public servants. Second, Harper still wants to maintain that Canada isn’t a left leaning country and not socialist in the least.

Ezra Levant, and Ann Coulter are a pair of publicity hounds who thrive on attention.

I guess we should feel sorry for the two of them.

Who in their right mind behaves like those two individuals.

Nothing is out of the bounds of good taste, for either of them.

Publicity is like oxygen, to those two.

Ezra looked pathetic on TV complaining about what a Victim he and Coulter are.

He doesn’t understand why Canadians hate her so much.

He even looked like he wanted to cry.

Poor Poor victims, the two of them

Bloody Doofus Levant, he doesn’t understand why people take issue with Coulter?

I presume he can read. Has he never read anything she has said.

    Pathetic pair

Red, this is the same lawyer who earns his living battling Human rights commissions; it’s his career; his life’s work. We’re talking about a man who successfully defended the likes of neo-nazi Marc Lemire for Gawd sake!

Ezzy is a self-loathing Jew; he seems to have no problem when white supremacists like Lemire show their anti-semitic ways; but if a Muslim so much as walk in front of a Jew; oh watch his hatred and venom & zionist ways take hold.

Me thinks Ezzy has run out of these white supremacist thugs plaintiffs in Canada, so he must recruit state side.

It was just a touch of sarcasm.

I know all about that vile Levant’s record.

Coulter had such filthy, and disgusting things to say about Jewish People.

He doesn’t have a problem with that.

I guess when she said all Muslims on the planet should be obliterated, Levant’s erotic fantasies went into overdrive.

I guess he trolls wherever he can, for cases.

He really is in the wrong profession, he should be an actor.

He would be perfect in a spaghetti western.

I find the pair of them abhorent.

        @ck,

“Red, this is the same lawyer who earns his living battling Human rights commissions; it’s his career; his life’s work. We’re talking about a man who successfully defended the likes of neo-nazi Marc Lemire for Gawd sake!”

You do know that Ezra Levant had nothing to do with the Lemire case, and he certainly did not defend him at the hearing.

        See the decision here:

Levant is not even mentioned once

No doubt about it – stunt. I wonder if this is part of the LeRant free speech mission?

“Coulter and Levant made the decision to cancel… probably long before any demonstrators showed up.”

Yeah, like about 10 seconds after she went public with that email from the university.

Never miss an opportunity to turn a little publicity into a lot of publicity! Haha!

  • I hear tell that around 5:00, a CBC reporter overheard someone from Coulter’s crew say the event might be canceled. Everyone’s bein’ played on this and AnnieGetcherGun is gettin’ more publicity than if she got up on her hind legs and spewed venom from her pie hole. The event was not canceled by the police or the university. Coulter and Levant made the decision to cancel… probably long before any demonstrators showed up.

Last night the media sources I read stated that it was Coulter’s “security” person who pulled the plug on her appearance. Although the whole situation looks contrived, I agree that the lack of organization and controls for the attendees left the university and police in a difficult situation… if things were to get bad and they had a strong preference for cancellation.

I do think that Harper wanted Coulter to speak.

All in all, the option of not speaking started to look like a better opportunity to spin support for a Coulter audience and intimidate others from displaying public anger concerning her hateful”humour” and political lies. Strategically, “better to keep your mouth shut and people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt,” applies too.

  • JJ

This is such a primitive, transparent manoeuvre I’m surprised more people didn’t pick up on it right away.

I can just see them all huddled around reading the media accounts about how she was told to ‘watch her mouth’…. “Hmm, how can we use this…?” Ha!

    • ck

Exactly JJ, I mean, she was spouting about complaining to human rights commission over email from U of O Provost. I had one question then which is now ringing in my mind: how the hell did she know about Human Rights Commissions? If there are organizations with similar mandates in U.S., it isn’t called human rights commissions. No, this reaks of Ezzy Levant all over this one. He had to have told her.

I also weighed in over at my place how this was all staged from the word go. I mean, c’mon, U of O?? Calgary, I get; Ezzy’s home town and captive audience who would hang on to her every word. But U Of O. Even Western is a stretch, but still, can find more sympathizers than at U of O.

There is much more evidence to support this conspiracy. Like I said, at my place, I went over them all.
