This (rumoured) move is just a ‘coincidence’, right Kory?

I mused a couple of blogposts back on whether or not Kory’s appointment to the high echelon of Quebecor would threaten to derail the efforts of a couple of fairly objective journalists at the Sun, such as Greg Weston who did some bang-up investigative reporting on the “Fake Lake” and other wasteful and extravagant spending measures the Harper Conservatives undertook for the upcoming G8/G20 summit.

However, I didn’t think Kory would move immediately to make sure his reporters aren’t in a position to embarrass his former Conservative employers, when he’s trying to hire journalists for Quebecor’s proposed news network, but if this rumour is true, it appears he’s attempted to do just that:

There was concern in the Parliamentary Press Gallery last week that the sudden appointment of Kory Teneycke, Mr. Harper’s former communications director, to oversee journalists at the Quebecor Media Inc. Parliament Hill bureau, may have been related to controversial stories about the summit spending. Several of the most controversial reports were broken by a member of the bureau, Sun Media columnist Greg Weston.

It appears something happened. One source said Mr. Weston’s column “is gone,” and there were possible talks about a position in Washington, D.C.

If I’m a journalist that likes to be known for their non-partisan work, and is being wooed by Kory to work for his yet-to-be-approved Fox News clone, or who has already made that move (say, someone like David Akin?), I’d be a tad concerned at such a move, and what other editorial control Kory and Quebecor in general will have over their dreamed-of TV “news network”. Is all criticism of the Harper government off limits at Fox News North, if it comes into being? If the move to shut down Weston’s column is true, and is any indication, I’m rather sceptical that this network will be anything more then a Conservative Party cheer-leading station, as Fox News is for the Republican Party in the US (if it gets approved by the CRTC).

I think your mistaking the gathering and reporting of news and opinion shows like Beck and O’Reilly. How far would Wagergate or the H1N1 paranoia story go? How far should it have gone? Was Jaffer really that big a story? They all get reported its just how long it runs for that gets decided.
But if your suggesting that the overspending of the Harper govt would not be news or a decision made not to report it then I’d say that was a bit of paranoia.

Why would KoryTV employ Greg Weston?
He feeds Liberals their faux scandals.

Wilson, do you live in never, neverland? Given all the attacks on Liberals by Weston, I’d think you’d like him.

You have a problem with the truth?

@wilson, it has already been concluded that you are on the PMO’s payroll:
      Bureaucrats monitor online forums

Real conservatives are pissed off when their tax dollars are being wasted. Since you are OK with Harper spending like a drunken sailor; you are obviously not a real conservative, and probably on the government payroll to boot.

You know who should hire Weston – Macleans.

They have reporters who are independant in their writings it seems.

And, damn, we need real reporters desparately.

I think I got the point loud and clear. Scott is not whining and bitching, but, the paranoia surrounding a news outlet is really fascinating.

    • @billg, I’m merely pointing out that if Weston’s column is indeed “coincidentally” gone a week after Kory gets hired, and a week after Weston helped break the news story of the Harperite’s wasteful spending (to his credit), I’m not exactly optimistic at what the network’s editorial control will be regarding what stories it would allow to be run.

      If it looks like/quacks like a duck…

I’m curious why you were optomistic Liberal reporters would get to run their stories on a conservative network, in the first place Scott.

  • Hey billg, you missed the point of this post by a Contry mile.

Nice to see the anti Quebec Harpercrites being run by QUEBECor.

As Nelson Muntz would say “Ha Ha!”

Please make the following changes to your lineup. Joining the Conservative’s in their bitching and whining about the CBC will now be the Liberals who will be bitching and whining about a new news network that has yet to even broadcast a single show.
