On Justin Trudeau

I thought this might deserve its own blogpost column. I was asked by a Liberal friend (who has been involved with organizing other Liberal leadership campaigns) what I thought of Justin Trudeau if/when he decided to run, and whether I’d support him.

It was done in the backdrop of that aforementioned Forum poll result, so I mentioned the same thing to him I just said on here; one poll 3 years out does not a Liberal government make, or a good leader, or the right leader for that matter. I’m withholding judgement til I see who else jumps in. That all said, if everything is about personality and charisma these days, and if the Canadian electorate has gotten to be US like in making or setting up a party leader a “president” figure, then maybe he’s the guy.

What I want to see from him is where he stands on core policies. I also believe he really needs to get some advisers to help him tone down some of the outbursts he does, because I think those don’t always serve him well. I enjoy when the right wing gets in a frenzy at at him over some of the stuff he says or does, but he needs to know where and when to do it. I believe if he incorporated more of his brother’s control or calm (something that Sasha shares with his father), he would be a more formidable opponent.

So for now, no endorsement of Justin from this corner (particularly not until he declares his candidacy); I want to see what he does on the policy front and who his other opponents are.

Haha! This sounds much too rational. You’ll never get a job these days writing for the Canadian media.
