There are 300 million guns in the US, by some estimates. As one person said online, if a proliferation of guns means society is safer, as those in the NRA and other pro-gun organizations claim, then the US should be one of the safest places in the world. There are more guns in the US then there are people. Logic dictates when you have that many weapons, they are going to fall into the hands of a crazy person. For example, what was the mother of the reported killer doing with a registered assault rifle, + a Glock pistol and a Sig Sauer? It was her guns he used at the school, and probably her guns that were used against her.
Some folks say now is not the time to not talk about gun control in the US. I disagree – if not now, when, I would ask those folks?
We should also keep that in mind up here as we see the Harper government, not content with killing the long-gun registry, actively considering whether or not to loosen up even more gun laws and regulations at the urging of their gun lobby allies. Whatever the controversial nature of the Registry, I don’t think a majority of Canadians would support these additional weakening of gun law. Newtown should being more scrutiny to Harper and the Conservatives kowtowing to a bunch of gun enthusiasts not wanting to fill out extra paperwork, or claiming their liberty is being stolen.
Ask Newtown; what they had stolen from them was a lot worse.
