Good news/more details from the OLP re: blogger accreditation

I received an email this evening from Christine McMillan. She is the Secretary General of the upcoming OLP Leadership and the VP of Communications for OLP. She has sent me more details about blogger accreditation to the OLP, and its all very good. I wanted to repost her email word for word, but as I dont have her permission yet to do that (she’s not responded to my request), I’ll paraphrase what she said, as I know lots of bloggers are wondering, judging from the communications I’ve been getting:

– The OLP will have a dedicated space for the accredited bloggers to work from in the concourse area.
– The accreditation page should be up at the OLP site soon (she has promised to get a timeline for us bloggers) and she has assured me there will be no charge for the bloggers that the OLP accredits to attend and cover the convention.

I will be trying to talk to her tomorrow on the phone to get some more details, such as how many bloggers they’ll be accrediting and who can apply, and anything else I can think to ask (please send in suggested questions if you’re a blogger and interested in attending/wanting more info.. and I’ll ask her) but on the face of it.. it’s exactly what I wanted to hear.

Oh, and she mentioned that on Friday night (the 25th of January) , the action kicks off with an opening and a tribute to Premier Mcguinty. On Saturday Morning at 9 am, the candidate speeches start. Once those speeches are done, the party will give instructions and voting gets underway.

I will probably not be at the Friday evening event (assuming they accredit me.. haha) due to having a diabetic cat I need to give shots 2x a day. I would be traveling up Saturday (probably by train unless someone wants to pick me up in Woodstock and put up with me in a car to Toronto) returning Sat night.. and then coming back up Sunday for the closing votes (The full convention is from Jan 25-27 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto).

UPDATE @ 8:04 pm: Just heard back from Christine.. no issue with me posting her email, but I’ve already paraphrased the main points.. so no worries.

  • I guess I don’t need to be a delegate then. Would have been nice to know in advance.

But it will be good to see all of you in the dedicated space. Hopefully it’s positioned well to allow for photos/videos/live-streaming.

Scott, thank you for your leadership on this, it’s greatly appreciated.

  • So the whole thing could be over before the speeches?

Scott – a couple of things I note here. First of all, there is an outside chance that it could be over with the first ballot, which will be conducted when each delegate registers. That’s if someone manages to take 50% of incoming registering delegate votes and performs strongly among the ex-officios.

The lowest vote getter has to drop off.

2nd ballot would be some time Saturday AM after the candidate speeches. Again, if someone takes more than 50%, that ends it.

The 1996 convention, proceeding like this, selected Dalton McGuinty on a deep ballot at something like 4 AM Sunday morning.

So anyway, depending on how Saturday plays out, you may not want to be “coming back up [from Woodstock? – Andrew] on Sunday morning.

    Anyway, good luck.

    • I would be there in time for 1st ballot on Saturday. I have my doubts it would be over so soon. Regardless, I’ll definitely know by the end of the day Saturday what was going on in regards to Sunday. We’ll see how it plays out.

  • […] After rumours that the Ontario Liberal Party wouldn’t be allowing bloggers’ access to the upcoming leadership convention, I’m happy to hear this. […]
