Leaning Towards Supporting A Winter Olympics Sochi Boycott

I’ve been on the fence over whether or not a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi is the right thing to be doing to protest Russia’s new rather draconian anti-LGBT laws. I figured athletes could symbolically protest it at the Games, and that might be the best way to go about it.

However, recent rumblings out of the International Olympic Committee seem to indicate if the Russians don’t punish the athletes who do this, they will – an obvious sop to the host country.

If the IOC is going to shut down anti-Russian LGBT protests (on top of the Russians possibly arresting athletes) I now lean towards boycotting them. Yes, it’s the Winter Olympics, where Canada has its best medal chances, and yes, it hurts the athletes by them not being there; but as I recall, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird used to say his Conservative Canadian government takes stands and issues on principle, not what the rest of the “herd” or world does or thinks.

If that’s the case, then here’s the ultimate issue you do it on to prove it (which would of course be ironic, seeing the ideological makeup of some in the Conservative caucus and their not-exactly friendly attitude towards LGBT rights).

    Have you noticed?

Our civil liberties and LGBT “rights” have developed an inversely proportional relationship. And not by coincidence.

Have not the governments of the so-called ‘five-eyes’ just been revealed to be spying on everyone and everything all of the time? And you wanna talk about boycotting Russia?!

WTF do I care about the good feelings of this priviledged group which I have always supported only to see them abandon the fight the moment their “rights” have been confirmed. Do any of these conscientious objectors have anything to say about the treatment of gays in our dearly beloved ally Saudi Arabia?

Meanwhile the folks on Wall Street are still sore about losing control of Russia’s resources and for Putin’s failure to aquiese to Western demands to start WW3 in Syria. They are engineering a propaganda war and some folks are lapping it up.

The whole of the Olympics offends me!

Plus ca change for the pathetic Left.
