I’ve been telling many of our Conservative friends who’ve been pointing to the Ipsos-Reid poll saying that nearly half of Canadians said the changes to getting rid of the mandatory longform were “good” to wait on other polls before asserting that number to be rock solid.
And sure enough, courtesy of Norman Spector in the Globe, comes word of a new Angus-Reid poll released today that shows overwhelming support for retaining the mandatory longform census:
.. according to the poll (margin of error 3.1 points), 52 per cent of Canadians think the government should reverse its decision and keep the mandatory long form census. Only 27 per cent support [...]

One pollster comes out declaring Harper has an Olympic-sized bounce; another comes out with a poll today that says it’s a national dead-heat (with the Olympics apparently having no effect), and a 3rd one just released says its numbers show stability from the last poll it did a week ago.
More polling to come I suspect, but as far as I’m concerned, we’re back to square one with voter intentions and preferences now that Parliament is about to be “un-prorogued” (my new word invention).

The polls are coming fast and furious today, folks:
The recent prorogation of Parliament does not sit well with a majority of Canadians..a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll conducted in partnership with the Toronto Star has found…53 per cent of respondents disagree with the decision to prorogue Parliament. Conversely, only 19 per cent agree with the move. Almost three-in-ten Canadians (28%) are undecided.
That is a substantial number, folks – not just the majority support, but the gap between those who agree and disagree. Even Conservative supporters don’t give Harper majority support in their own group: only 46% of them support it, while 35% disagree. If you’re wondering [...]

..and why I mentioned in the prior blogpost of mine that the pressure needs to be kept on them on the Afghan detainees story. The first poll taken after the Afghan detainee flap and the revelations by Colvin and then the sudden reversal by General Natynczyk that yes, there was evidence that Afghan detainees had been tortured shows public opinion starting to turn against the Cons:
Conservative Lead Narrows as Liberals Bounce Back
The governing Conservative Party is still leading in Canada, but the Liberal Party has gained support, according to the Canadian Political Pulse, conducted by Angus Reid Public Opinion in partnership with the Toronto Star…Across the country, [...]

That title is NOT a reference to the suddenly-back-in-the-news Wafergate thing, although I suppose it could be (by the way, I think I like BCL’s term for it better; ‘cracker caper’). However, if you’re looking for tape on that and a recap of a story that proves it’s summertime around here, and that both media and politicians are looking for something to make news, read Jeff’s piece. (Plus, you can read how some Conservative supporting folks have gone way over the edge on this story and may end up losing a bit of money, dignity, or both. Then again, this is Lifesite news, so I’m not surprised).
No, my [...]

Apparently, according to some readers, I only bring up polls I like on this blog. First off, I’ll mention that Angus Reid released an (online) poll for the Toronto Star the past couple of days that showed the Cons. up by 10 over the Liberals, had the NDP near 20%, and which seemingly put Chantal Hebert into overdrive mode at the Star in her op-ed columns claiming this poll showed that the Liberals and Dion were dead in Quebec; she was already doing this after the CROP/La Presse poll came out earlier that had the Liberals down by 10 to the Cons. and BQ in Quebec.
This was done a week or so after another column where she played down other polls which showed Conservative strength much lower in Quebec and had her arguing those polls didn’t match what was heard and seen on the ground (which curiously enough, is what Antonio over at Fuddle-Duddle has been claiming as well to me as well – coincidence?). So, I’ll be very interested to see if the new Harris-Decima poll gets mentioned by her – or others – that shows another polling deadlock:
Continue reading Libs and Cons deadlocked in new Decima Poll. Will Chantal Hebert mention it?
