Polls: Bob Rae may be gaining support, and marijuana is popular

Those are the findings of one specific poll. First the poll #’s and the pollster’s speculation:

Buoyed by high approval ratings for interim leader Bob Rae, support for the federal Liberals is on the rise, according to a new poll. The Forum Research survey found support for Rae’s Liberals at 25 per cent, a four-point increase since the pollster’s last survey in mid-December. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives received 35 per cent, Nycole Turmel’s NDP had 28 per cent, while the Bloc Québécois and Green Party earned 6 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively….Bozinoff suggested the Liberals’ popularity increase may be attributed to Rae — the interim leader’s [...]

Liberal Convention results/wrapup thoughts

As you might expect, though I was not at the Convention in Ottawa this weekend, I did monitor how events went, and here is my take on things:

Things I liked:

- The election of Mike Crawley as Liberal Party President.  It was a bit of a surprise win, according to some I was reading at the Convention. One statement I read from an observer was that a lot of Liberals expected Sheila Copps to win, but they all voted for Mr. Crawley. Apparently, enough like-minded people did the same thing, and we now have a President who was preaching renewal, and also was promising to do it behind [...]

The case is made for the Liberal Party to adopt primaries to pick leaders

As those politically inclined know, the Liberal Party is holding a convention in Ottawa this weekend, where delegates will be voting to elect different candidates to various party positions, and also to vote on several different policy resolutions. One of those is to adopt a US primary-style system to open up a Liberal leadership vote to potentially hundreds of thousands of Canadians, rather then the 1000 or so delegates that have traditionally done it.

I’ve not had a strong opinion really one way or the other on this one, though it would serve the purpose of opening up the voting system to more Canadians. I’ve read a column by [...]

All options should be discussed at least – not thrown away arbritarily.

I see that we have some stories in the media about “merger talk growing” between the Liberals and NDP again after the funeral of Mr. Layton. We even had a couple of Liberal MP’s come out (Justin Trudeau notably) saying that while he wasn’t convinced it was the way to go, he was willing to listen or be convinced otherwise. There was then others such as Mr Rae flatly rejecting it.

Some say this is just media driven, and perhaps it is. Personally though, when you’re a party that has been losing votes over the last three elections, and losing seats, including your worst showing ever in the [...]

Weekend thoughts

The Liberal delegates have (unfortunately in my view) voted to extend the wait back to 2013 before choosing a new Liberal leader. I’ve already gone over my objection to that, but it seems from what I was hearing that the LPC brought out the party leaders heavy artillery and urged acceptance of their motion, rather then accept either the 6 month requirement or a middle of the road option as my friend Jeff was putting forward. The LPC brass got their way, it seems. I’d have thought since 2006 that some of our party would learn that the Party bosses and leaders don’t always know best. PERHAPS they will [...]

I support the middle path timeline subamendment for the Liberal Party Leadership Vote

I’m away visiting my folks for the weekend (for Father’s Day, the immediate family is getting together), but I decided to interrupt my sojourn and get on here just to say that I think that Jeff Jedras – fellow Liberal blogger and also a delegate at this Liberal Extraordinary Convention this weekend – has put forth an amendment that is worthy of support.

Read more of it at Jeff’s site, but it basically boils down to Jeff arguing that while the current 6 month time line for choosing the new Liberal leader int he LPC constitution may be too short… what the Liberal Leadership executive is offering as the [...]

A word about sulphur

Apparently, some folks on the Conservative side are a tad upset at some sulphur comparison Mr. Ignatieff made about Harper; some of the usual suspects in the media too. Some folks don’t have very long memories about certain Conservative smear campaigns against present and past Liberal leaders – but hey, Harper didn’t say those smear campaign stuff directly – his sycophants and MP’s did -  whereas Iggy did say it as a direct description, so that’s apparently horrible.

(I can attest to sulphur smelling like rotten eggs, by the way. I grew up in an area with lots of farms that used sulphur wells. Nasty stuff.)

Above and beyond [...]

Interesting last Ekos poll and commentary before Parliament’s summer break

This poll is a day old in its release, but I found it noteworthy for a couple of reasons:

One reason is this:

(This) EKOS poll gives the Conservatives 30.5 per cent support from Canadians, compared to 26.3 per cent for the Liberals. The Tories have been sliding over the past few weeks, losing the 10-point lead they enjoyed over the Liberals not so long ago. The NDP, meanwhile, are at 17.4 per cent, compared to the Green Party at 12.3 per cent; the Bloc is at 10.5 per cent.

“Their (the Harper Conservatives) current vote intention is the lowest since they took office and the leading direction of [...]

Looks like Canada 150 wasn't a bomb after all

You might expect my Liberal blogging colleagues to offer praise to the conference (though these folks have never minced words or not criticized the Liberal Party when they felt the need to), but it appears a fair number of media folks are not repeating the conventional wisdom before Canada 150 took place that this was going to be a “bomb”, and indeed, some stated the conference helped to offer up an interesting idea or 2 from Ignatieff – one media scribe even called it “ambitious”.

Personally, I will be interested to watch what – if any- ideas the conference invitees offered will be followed up on by Ignatieff and [...]

Make up your own mind on Canada 150

As I said yesterday, a lot of journalists and other opinionated folks in the media and elsewhere have gone in with pre-conceived notions that the Liberals ‘Canada 150′ conference is going to bomb.

Well, here’s a chance to watch for yourself and make up your own mind; the conference is being streamed live all weekend.

There also are several Liberal bloggers there in attendance liveblogging the event and giving their impressions – folks such as Far and Wide, Liberal Arts and Minds, Impolitical, Morton’s Musings, Confessions of A Liberal Mind, A BC’er in Toronto, to name the ones I know. (If there are others, I will update and add [...]
