As I said yesterday, a lot of journalists and other opinionated folks in the media and elsewhere have gone in with pre-conceived notions that the Liberals ‘Canada 150′ conference is going to bomb.
Well, here’s a chance to watch for yourself and make up your own mind; the conference is being streamed live all weekend.
There also are several Liberal bloggers there in attendance liveblogging the event and giving their impressions – folks such as Far and Wide, Liberal Arts and Minds, Impolitical, Morton’s Musings, Confessions of A Liberal Mind, A BC’er in Toronto, to name the ones I know. (If there are others, I will update and add [...]

Kady O’Malley of CBC details the EKOS poll that has just come out this AM, which shows a Conservative drop and the Liberals now only trailing the Conseratives by 5 percentage points:
Conservatives: 33.1 (-2.8) Liberals: 27.8 (+1.1) NDP: 16.0 (-1.0) Green: 13.4 (+2.2) Bloc Quebecois: 9.8 (+0.6) Undecided: 14.7
Regionally, the Liberals have managed to take back the lead in Ontario – the first time in a long time in an Ekos poll – and the Cons have really slipped back in Quebec (specific numbers available at the aforementioned and linked to Kady article).
Speaking of Kady, her analysis of the poll:
…let’s take a moment to ponder [...]

..and why I mentioned in the prior blogpost of mine that the pressure needs to be kept on them on the Afghan detainees story. The first poll taken after the Afghan detainee flap and the revelations by Colvin and then the sudden reversal by General Natynczyk that yes, there was evidence that Afghan detainees had been tortured shows public opinion starting to turn against the Cons:
Conservative Lead Narrows as Liberals Bounce Back
The governing Conservative Party is still leading in Canada, but the Liberal Party has gained support, according to the Canadian Political Pulse, conducted by Angus Reid Public Opinion in partnership with the Toronto Star…Across the country, [...]

I won’t sugar-coat my views on things; the latest set of polls are not good for those of us in the Liberal camp. The latest includes today’s Ekos poll release, that has a few of us Liberal-allied blogs smarting. I’m sure the Liberal politicians and strategists are smarting even worse.
I have a few qualifiers over these polling disappointments – I’m still not convinced we’d have seen this big of a drop-off if the Liberals had managed to force an election the past 2 weeks. I think people would have been grumpy and then gotten on to accepting it. However, it’s obvious that the charge that the Liberals and [...]

I don’t often do a lot of “wonkish” blogposts on here with regards to the inner workings of political party and whether something (like the political culture of the members) should be changed or not, but in light of a recent situation, I thought I’d do such a post on the topic today. [...]

On this Sunday, just a brief comment about this announcement by Michael Ignatieff that there would be a renewal committee established by the Liberal party. It’s all well and good to establish a committee to renew the party, but this committee is comprised of the Liberal establishment as well as members of the Liberal caucus. I’ve no doubt they’re all qualified people, but if you want party renewal, shouldn’t you be at least putting on some actual grassroots members of the Liberal Party on this renewal committee – even a token one?
For example, why not appoint a member or 2Â of the Young Liberals to this renewal committee?

I’ve seen this being mentioned elsewhere on blogs and in at least 1 newspaper article (though where escapes me at the moment as I search for it), but there’s been some talk on whether the Liberal Party should replace the traditional Leadership Convention (some would call it anachronistic) that uses delegates to choose Liberal leaders, with something a bit more democratic and a bit more modern – something like “One Member, One Vote”, where all party members would have the chance to elect their leader, and not just several hundred delegates (and allow those members to vote for the candidates from their own riding and even from their own [...]

The former Liberal premier of New Brunswick, Frank McKenna, has announced he will not be running for the Liberal leadership. I’ve stated a couple of times I’d remain neutral in this race (for now), but I’ll say this: you can’t argue with his success as premier, but for myself anyhow, Mr. Mckenna was a bit too far to the right on certain issues – and you probably wouldn’t have seen me rushing to embrace his candidacy.
I should also mention per Warren’s blog earlier, that Dominic Leblanc is the first to enter the ring to compete for the Liberal leadership. I confess I don’t know much about his policy [...]

A suggestion was made over at the Liberal 308 Facebook group that perhaps a website might be in order – not only to help spread the word, but to be usable for those folks reluctant to use Facebook. So, one of our Facebook group members, Clara Chang, took some initiative and created one.
She gave those of us who are admins over at that FB group administrative access at the website, and I thought I’d spiff it up a bit. Check the revamped Liberal 308 website. Yo can also get there now by clicking on the Liberal 308 logo in my sidebar, as I’ve changed the link in [...]

..for being somewhat disconnected from blogging of late, but family matters have intruded again.. and that’s much more important then blogging, though I think we’re going to have some things solved as of next week, which will be a relief to everyone.
In the meanwhile though, the Liberal 308 group at Facebook is growing steadily since it’s creation.. and I’ve seen more then a few Liberal bloggers either join it at FB or support it publicly at their blogs. There’s quite some active discussion going on over there too, so if you’re a Liberal who believes that the Liberal Party needs to have structural and/or organizational reforms, and also [...]
